Joseph Pilates using Classical Pilates equipment

Why Classical Matters

Classical Pilates is the original method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. Born in Germany in 1883, Pilates overcame childhood illness through a lifelong study of movement, anatomy, and breath. He eventually created a system he called Contrology: a precise sequence of exercises designed to strengthen the entire body evenly and create balance in body and mind.

In the 1920s, Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara opened their New York studio, where dancers, athletes, and everyday clients trained with his innovative equipment. The Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and Ladder Barrel are just a few examples of Pilates’ apparatus. His method quickly gained a reputation for building strength while restoring alignment and vitality.

Classical Pilates preserves this tradition. It follows Pilates’ original exercises, equipment, and order, creating a workout that is both efficient and deeply effective. Each movement builds on the last, creating logical guidelines for progression. Breath, concentration, control, precision, centering, and flow guide every exercise. When you practice classical Pilates, you’re not just working out, you’re participating in a method that has stood the test of time for over a century.
